AI for Handymen
Twenty small jobs a week means twenty times the phone calls, quotes and scheduling — for a fraction of the money per job. Your AI answers every call, prices the small stuff on the spot, and packs your week by suburb while you stay on the tools.
The Handyman Problem: Lots of Small Jobs, No Time to Answer the Phone
Every other trade has a handful of big jobs to manage. You’ve got a phone full of little ones — and the admin doesn’t get any smaller just because the invoice does.
Most trades build a day around a few decent jobs. A handyman’s day is a list: a door adjustment in the morning, two hours of gyprock patching, a flatpack assembly after lunch, a gate that won’t latch, a leaking gutter joint, a TV bracket, a fly screen, and a “quick look” at a deck that turns into next week’s work. Every one of them needs a call answered, a scope pinned down, a price given, an address recorded and a slot found — the same admin as a $6,000 job, for a $180 invoice.
And you’re the worst possible person to answer that phone. You’re up a ladder, you’ve got a drill in one hand, or you’re halfway through a cut. So the call rings out. The caller — who already found three handymen on Google before they dialled you — rings the next one. They’re not loyal yet; you haven’t met them. Small-job customers shop on who picks up, not who’s cheapest.
Then there’s the quoting drag. A carpet layer measures a room; a fencing contractor measures a boundary. You get “the thing in the laundry is broken, how much?” Pricing that properly means questions, and questions mean phone tag, and phone tag at 7pm after a nine-hour day is how quotes quietly never get sent. Meanwhile the jobs you did win are scattered across four suburbs because they were booked in the order they came in, not in the order that makes geographic sense.
None of this is a work-ethic problem. It’s a coverage problem. One person cannot be on the tools and on the phone at the same time, and hiring admin is a big step on small-job margins — office roles sit under the Clerks—Private Sector Award, and once you add 12% superannuation, annual leave and personal leave, even twenty hours a week runs to thousands a month. That’s the gap an AI fills: it answers on the first ring at 6am, 8pm and Sunday, asks the same questions you’d ask, and drops the job into your calendar in a suburb you’re already working.
Built for Small, Varied, High-Volume Work
Not a message-taking service that texts you a name and number. An AI that scopes the job, prices it against your rates, and books it where it fits.
Photo Quoting on the Spot
The AI asks callers to text photos of the job and attaches them to the enquiry with the address and notes, so you can price a dozen small jobs from the ute instead of driving to look at them.
- Prompts for photos on every quote enquiry
- Attaches images to the job in your software
- Works on any phone — no app for the customer
- Timestamped record of what you quoted on
Hourly-Plus-Materials Templates
Load your hourly rate, half-day and full-day rates, minimum call-out and your fixed prices for repeat jobs. The AI picks the right structure and asks the follow-ups that actually move the price.
- Hourly, half-day, full-day and fixed-price modes
- Materials handled as supply-and-install or client-supplied
- Weekend and after-hours rates applied automatically
- Vague or multi-day work flagged for you to price
Suburb Batching
Books new jobs into days you are already working nearby, so your week fills by geography instead of by whoever rang first. Less driving, more billable hours, same effort.
- Knows your service area and travel times
- Offers slots on days you’re already in that suburb
- Fills half-empty days before opening new ones
- Won’t stack jobs back to back with no travel gap
Full-Scope Capture
Catches the “while you’re here, can you also…” list before you arrive, not after. Every extra task gets scoped and priced up front so a minimum call-out grows into a proper half-day.
- Prompts callers for the rest of the list
- Prices each added task against your rates
- Adjusts the booked duration to match the real scope
- Sends the customer a written scope before the visit
After-Hours & Weekend Enquiries
Homeowners book handymen at 8pm and on Sunday morning, because that’s when they’re home looking at the thing that’s broken. The AI answers then, at no extra charge on any plan.
- Answers evenings, weekends and public holidays
- Books straight into your next available slot
- Morning summary of every after-hours enquiry
- Forward all calls, overflow only, or after-hours only
Licensed-Work Referral
Configured with your own list of what you do and don’t take on, so callers asking for licensed electrical, plumbing or gasfitting work get told plainly and referred on — not quoted.
- Your scope rules, set once at onboarding
- Refers regulated work to your usual sparkie or plumber
- Captures the lead so you keep the referral relationship
- Value thresholds configurable to your state’s rules
Knowing the Limits: Redirecting Licensed Electrical and Plumbing Work
Handyman scope is defined by state law, and the rules aren’t the same in every state. The AI should know where your line is — and hold it on every call.
Two separate limits apply to handyman work in Australia, and they get confused constantly. The first is a value threshold for general building work, and it differs by state. In New South Wales, residential building work over $5,000 in labour and materials requires a contractor licence from NSW Fair Trading. In Queensland, the QBCC threshold for most building work is $3,300. In Victoria, domestic building work over $10,000 requires registration with the VBA. Below those figures, general handyman work is broadly open — above them, it isn’t.
The second limit has no dollar threshold at all. Electrical installation work must be done by a licensed electrician in every state and territory, full stop — a $60 powerpoint is as regulated as a $6,000 switchboard upgrade. The same principle covers most plumbing, drainage and gasfitting work. In Victoria that’s Energy Safe Victoria for electrical and the VBA for plumbing; in NSW it’s Fair Trading; in Queensland the QBCC. Cheap price, small job, mate’s rates — none of it changes the licence requirement, and none of it protects you if something goes wrong afterwards.
This matters on the phone more than anywhere else, because callers don’t know the rules and will happily ask you to do things you can’t legally touch. “Can you just move this powerpoint while you’re patching the wall?” is a licensed job. “Can you plumb in the new dishwasher?” is a licensed job. Saying no to those on call twelve of a long day, without sounding like you’re knocking back work, is the part most handymen get wrong.
So the AI is configured with your scope, not a generic one: the jobs you take, the jobs you refer, and the value ceiling that matches your state and your licence status. When a caller asks for regulated work it says so plainly, offers to pass them to the sparkie or plumber you normally work alongside, and captures the lead either way so the referral flows back to you. Nothing here is legal advice — check your obligations with your state regulator — but the setup means your phone stops quoting work you can’t do.
How It Works for Your Handyman Business
Three steps, about fifteen minutes, and you keep the number that’s already on your ute.
Load Your Rates and Your Scope
Your hourly rate, minimum call-out, half-day and full-day pricing, fixed prices for repeat jobs, your service suburbs, and the list of work you refer on rather than take. This is the step that makes the AI sound like you instead of a call centre. We do the setup for you — it’s included on every plan.
Connect Your Calendar or Job Software
We link the AI to ServiceM8, Tradify, Fergus, simPRO or AroFlo so booked jobs and customer photos land where you already work, and sync invoicing through to Xero or MYOB for BAS time. No job management software yet? The built-in scheduler handles a solo run fine on its own.
Forward Your Calls
Set call forwarding on your existing Telstra, Optus or Vodafone mobile — all calls, no-answer only, or after-hours only. It’s a two-minute change you make from your handset, and you can switch the rules whenever you like. Starting with no-answer forwarding and widening it once you see what was ringing out is the low-risk way in.

Straight answers for solo handymen weighing up AI call answering.
It quotes the way you would on the phone — by asking questions until it knows enough. You load your standard rates once: hourly rate, minimum call-out, half-day and full-day rates, and fixed prices for the jobs you do over and over (rehanging a door, patching plaster, mounting a TV, replacing a screen door). The AI works out which bucket the job falls into and asks the follow-ups that actually change the price — single storey or double, brick or plaster, is the fitting already there, do you need to supply materials. Straightforward jobs get a quote sent on the spot. Anything vague, multi-day or unusual gets captured in full and flagged for you to price yourself, so you’re never locked into a number the AI invented.
Yes, and for handyman work it’s the single biggest time-saver. The AI asks the caller to text through photos of the job — the rotten deck board, the sagging gate, the crack in the cornice — and attaches them to the enquiry along with the address and their notes. Those photos land in your job management software with the rest of the details, so you can price a dozen small jobs from the ute at smoko instead of driving to twelve addresses to look at them. Photos also settle arguments later: if the job on site is bigger than the job in the picture, you’ve got a timestamped record of what you quoted on. It works with any phone — no app for the customer to download.
It tells them your minimum up front, politely, before anyone wastes a morning. You set the number — say a one-hour minimum plus travel — and the AI quotes it as the floor on every job. Some callers will hear that and hang up, which is fine: a fifteen-minute tap washer job forty minutes away was never going to pay. Plenty of others will say “well, while you’re here, can you also…” and start listing things, which is exactly what you want. The AI is set up to prompt for that — asking whether there’s anything else on the list — so a $120 minimum turns into a $400 half-day. You can also set it to batch under-minimum jobs into a nearby run rather than knocking them back outright.
That’s the point of it. Handyman work lives or dies on travel time — five jobs across five suburbs is a day of driving, five jobs in one suburb is a good day’s earning. The AI knows your service area, your typical duration by job type, and what’s already in your calendar, so when a Frankston caller wants a Tuesday it offers the Tuesday you’re already in Frankston. When you’ve got a half-empty Thursday around Ringwood, it steers new Ringwood enquiries into the gaps rather than scattering them across the week. It won’t overbook you either — it factors travel between bookings instead of stacking jobs back to back and leaving you to explain why you’re two hours late.
For most solo operators, yes. Solo Tradie is $199 a month (AUD, GST included) and covers one phone line, up to 100 calls a month, message taking, basic job scheduling, after-hours call capture and SMS notifications to your mobile. If you’re a one-person business taking a few calls a day, 100 a month is comfortable headroom — and if you do go over, calls still get answered, billed at $2.50 each rather than dropping to voicemail. Step up to Growing Team ($449/mo) when you want instant quote generation, calendar sync, ServiceM8 and Tradify integration and automatic quote follow-up. There’s no lock-in contract, so the honest answer is start on Solo Tradie and move up only if the call volume makes you. Full breakdown on the pricing page.
Yes, and it’s worth configuring properly on day one. Electrical installation work and most plumbing and gasfitting work require a licensed tradesperson in every Australian state and territory, with no dollar threshold that makes it legal for an unlicensed handyman — that’s Energy Safe Victoria and the VBA in Victoria, NSW Fair Trading in New South Wales, and the QBCC in Queensland. The AI is configured with your own list of what you do and don’t take on, so when someone calls about a new powerpoint or a hot water service it says plainly that it’s licensed work, and either refers them to the sparkie or plumber you normally work with or takes their details for you to pass on. You keep the goodwill and the referral relationship, and you don’t end up quoting work you can’t legally touch.
